Right! I knew it was a stupid error! I added mu, and that absorbed 1 df,
leaving hr with 2 numerator df as expected. Then I realized I also left
out male*female interaction, which was why hr*male*female was absorbing
an extra df.

 

I am embarrassed. Sorry to bug you about trivia.
