The name ASReml was chosen rather casually at a workshop for biomtricians on the analysis of plant breeding data. It was chosen as a variation on the name AI-REML since it is based on the AI algortihm but there were already at least 2 programs called AIREML in existence. So, the A stands for Average Information. In the context of plant breeding field trials, S stands for Spatial as Brian intimated (i.e. allowing an AR cross AR correlation structure across plots at the residual level. However, S can also stand for Sparsity since it is the Sparse matrix methods in ASReml which allow for large models and fast execution.
