Dear Heidi,

Rather than use   PROV/FAM   in the model, use PROV.FAM

and then the G structure 
   PROV.FAM 2
   PROV 0 DIAG !GU
   (40 starting values for 40 different family within provenance effects)
   FAM 0 0
   
   
   should do the trick.
   
   Best wishes
   
   Arthur
   PROV/FAM  is expanded into   40  terms like PROV_1.FAM
      so the syntax does not allow specification of indivivdual starting values
      and !GU qualifications.
