I have had the variance structures set up as:
1 1 4
## This coding is missing the 1 line R structure definition
## which is expected here because of the preceding '1 1'
## So change the '1 1' to '0 0' so that ASReml does not expect to
## read an R structure definition
## OR insert a single line containing a zero viz
0 ## (0 means all records, independent, equal variance)
## so that the R structure is defined

sCONES.newid 2
sCONES 0 US !GP
1.5
newid
## The previous 4 lines can be presented as
# sCONES.newid 1
# newid 1.5 !GP
