Could you suggest what the possible solution for this error?

I presume it is memory related and one factor with 8000 levels only because of
what I did next.

I shorted the data file and got it to work with about 402,000 lines out of the
700,000 lines - about 5000 levels.
Treating the factor a covariate allows the full data to be read in but that is
not a solution.

It would be nice to be able to override the default levels for a factor if
that is the limitation.
