Dear Kim,

If the data is coded 1 2 3 4 5
and you want         1 2 2 3 3  
use
  agegrp  !SET 1 2 2 3 3
  
  The brackets in the !SUB expression would have confused ASREML because it is 
looking for a list.
  
  The  !SUB  expression  works quite differently and is designed for when
  the data is say  2.3 4.5 99.2 101
          and you want to recode to  1 2 3 4 respectively.
          recode  !SUB 2.3 4.5 99.2 101
               would do that.
