I'll distribute this to the list as a warning.
Your linear model was
gfw10 cfw10 ~ Trait Tr.line Tr.damage Tr.brtype,
!r Tr.animal Tr.dam !f Tr.flock
Looking through the list of factors printed out in the .asr file
(after the reported error) I notice that Tr.dam is not included.
This is because it is confused with Tr.damage.
When ASREML finds a factor name, it first checks if it matches something it
knows. Here it Tr.dam matches Tr.damage.
So it inserts Tr.damage into the model again
[then drops it when it realizes it is repeated].
Hence Factor structure does not fit G-structure because Tr.dam is missing.
Solution : retype dam as Dam
or insert -Tr.dam before Tr.damage
So that Tr.dam is defined first. Tr.damage will not match Tr.dam.
This is subtle
