I doubt this would fix your problem.  The old syntax is still permitted
in simple cases as here.

I can't see an obvious error.  The 'last line read' should giv a clue
in conjunction with the .asr file as to how far through ASREML has got.
[The last line read will not include  the initial values covered by !+3 and !+10
as these are read directly.
[ASREML reports each G structure as it reads it in]


I suggest replacing
  9870 0 0
  
  
  with
  
  animal 0 -1
  
  
  Also, in the factor definitions  make sure both  animal and dam have  !P
  specified.  Otherwise, dam will not be coded as per animal and will not 
  agree in size so that the structure size for Tr.ani Tr.dam  will not
  be  4 times 9870  but something else.
