I believe that ASREML uses a Taylor series approximation, and then
assumes that the estimated variance and covariance components are known
for inclusion in the formula. There are a number of statistics texts
that will provide the derivation and background information - I suggest
that you look at: Kendall, M. G., A. Stuart, et al. (1987). Kendall's
Advanced Theory of Statistics: Design and Analysis, and Time Series. New
York, Oxford University Press.
