Dear Hermann,
The !I is used when the data field is a factor [not variate]
and the data values are not integers 1 ... n.
In this situation, !I tells ASREML to recode the data values
and to treat the data values as labels rather than levels.
Since coding is in the order values are discovered, it is most likely
that the recoding will not be 1=1 2=2 3=3 4=4 5=5.
Consequently when analysing the recoded factor (as a variable; ASREML
will probably let you do it), the values actually analysed will be
permuted.
So, if DROUGHT is a factor, it is unnecessary to to use !I.
if DROUGHT is a variable to be analysed, you must not use !I
